Description

Full Beatles autographs obtained by a film extra from A Hard Day's Night

Vintage circa 1960s autograph album, 4.75 x 4, signed and inscribed inside on adjacent pages in black ballpoint, "To Nina, love from, George Harrison," "Ringo Starr, xxx," "To Nina, love Paul McCartney, xx," and "John Lennon, xx." In fine condition. The consignor notes that the autographs were obtained either on March 31st or on April 1 or 2, 1964, at the Scala Theatre in London, England, when the group were shooting scenes for their first feature film A Hard Day's Night. The autographs were obtained by a film extra who appeared in a variety of movies during the 1960s; as such, the album also contains signatures from Ingrid Bergman, Omar Sharif, Susan Hampshire, Cliff Richard, and Wilfrid Brambell.

Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Tracks, and by a letter of provenance from the original recipient: "For three days, my sister Grace and I were needed to take part in the film 'Hard Day's Night' as extras. The role was mainly us shouting and screaming at the Beatles as they did their performances on stage-not that we heard very much because everything was so loud. On one of the days we were on set waiting outside the theatre to buy tickets for the Beatles Show. It was very cold that day, and because we were filming outside I began to feel unwell. One of the crew noticed me and kindly let me stand down for a while taking me into the restaurant where it was much warmer. He then went and got me a cup of tea and a couple of aspirin. As he handed me the tea, he pointed out that the Beatles were sitting over at the other side of the room having a quiet break, so he suggested that I just sat there quietly. After taking my tablets and sipping my tea, I warmed through, and began to feel much better. As I sat there looking over at the Beatles, I impulsively felt into my handbag for my autograph book and pen, then cheekily walked over to the Beatles and asked them for their autographs. I felt so guilty because this was their break and I felt as though perhaps I was taking advantage. Then John Lennon asked me 'What's the matter with you then Love?' I told him that I had not been feeling too well outside, and that they had let me come in to warm up and have a drink. He then said 'You look alright to me Love!' At that moment-Paul, Ringo and George had a bit of a giggle, and John reached out to take my autograph book from me. He wrote 'To Nina' before his signature, then the others signed too."
