The polar explorer offers his services to President Grant, "should my experiences in the Arctic seas be regarded as of value to the expedition to the North Pole contemplated by an Act of Congress"

Arctic explorer and physician (1832-1881) who served as ship's surgeon for the Second Grinnell Expedition in 1853-1855, led his own expedition in an attempt to reach the North Pole in 1860-61, and returned to command Satterlee Hospital in Philadelphia during the Civil War. ALS signed "I. I. Hayes," one page, 7.75 x 9.75, The Union League Club letterhead, July 13, 1870. Handwritten letter to "President U. S. Grant," in full: "I have the honor respectfully to tender my services to the government, should my experiences in the Arctic seas be regarded as of value to the expedition to the North Pole contemplated by an Act of Congress." In fine condition.
