Ellsworth receives pay for the prosecution of "State Criminals" in Connecticut

Third chief justice of the United States (1745-1807) and delegate to the Constitutional Congress who later submitted the amendments which became the Bill of Rights. Manuscript DS, signed "O. Ellsworth," one page both sides, 7.75 x 4.25, September 18, 1784. Pay order submitted to Treasurer John Lawrence, signed on the front by George Pitkin and Samuel Wyllys, and endorsed on the reverse by Oliver Ellsworth. In part: "Please to pay Oliver Ellsworth Esq'r State Attorney for Hartford County out of any monies raised for the Support of Civil Government the sum of forty shillings Lawful money for part of Bills of Capt. Taud against State Criminals." In fine condition.
