Description

Partly-printed DS, signed "Wm. G. Fargo" and “Jas. C. Fargo,” one page, 11.5 x 8, May 11, 1894. Stock certificate for two shares in the American Express Company issued to Jeanie M. Flagg, signed at the conclusion by James C. Fargo as president and William C. Fargo as assistant secretary. A handsome certificate illustrated with a vignette of a watchdog, used by the company to symbolize trust and security. In fine condition.

William Fargo (1818-1881) co-founded the important financial firms of American Express Company and Wells Fargo with his business partner, Henry Wells. His brother, J. C. Fargo (1829-1915), served as a president of American Express for 30 years and pioneered the development of traveler's cheques.
