Description

English social reformer and author (1808-1877) remembered as an influential advocate for women's rights, particularly for her activist campaigns over child custody and the conditions of divorce. ALS signed “C. Norton,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7.25, no date. Handwritten letter, in part: "I have put off from day to day thanking you…in hopes I might say 'coming Ma'am!' like the waiters at the Hotel, but I seem to get worse instead of better, & having got cold at the Polish fete, have had leaches & worries which, with the weather, make me willing still to put off my avatar till Saturday. The tell me Cowes is not so healthy, or quiet as Ryde, & indeed great rumours have reached us of Scarlet fever, spotted plague, & the diseases prevalent at Cowes…write a line to tell me if there is any truth about Scarlet fever‚for I am a coward on that point. God willing, I should like to be at Cowes on Saturday." She goes on to ask for lodging recommendations, should she be able to make the trip. In fine condition.
