Description

American politician, lawyer, and judge (1779-1853) from Mississippi who served as the state's second governor; he was involved in the apprehension and prosecution of Aaron Burr for the 'Burr conspiracy,' and testified at Burr's treason trial in October 1807. Poindexter's testimony suggested that Burr's arrest had been based on flimsy evidence, which probably played a part in his acquittal. Partly-printed DS, signed "Geo. Poindexter," one page, 15.75 x 9.75, August 3, 1820. As governor of Mississippi, Poindexter appoints Isham Russell as "a Constable in and for the County of Marion." Signed at the conclusion in ink by Governor Poindexter and countersigned by Secretary of State Daniel Williams. The white paper seal affixed to the lower left remains intact. In very good condition, with intersecting folds, several small edge tears, toned edges, and toned tape to reverse.
