German military officer (1744-1813) who commanded the Jäger corps of the Hessian Leib Infantry Regiment attached to British forces in the American Revolutionary War and was captured at Yorktown in 1781; his 'Essay on Partisan Warfare' was a widely read treatise on guerrilla warfare. Rare ALS in German, signed “Ewald,” one page, 8 x 10, July 12, 1789. Untranslated handwritten letter by Ewald. In fine condition.
