Description

German-born composer (1791-1864) best known for such operas as Les Hugenots and Robert le diable. ALS in French, signed “Meyerbeer,” three pages, 8.25 x 10.25, June 1, 1860. Handwritten letter to the president of "la commission dramatique," regarding difficulties with the Théâtre de la Renaissance. He defends the interests of young composers who have so much difficulty in performing. He found that it was not enough for the Renaissance to be able to represent vaudevilles with verses, but that they should be able to play "operas bouffes with recitative in place of dialogue," a privilege which was granted to the Odeon. He also wants the commission to call on composers to fix the rights due to the opera when the grand opera is played in the same evening as the opera bouffe. In fine condition, with a small chip to the bottom edge of the first page, and seal-related paper loss to the bottom edge of the second page.
