He then proceeds to write about how biotechnology and "the techniques that have been developed in molecular biology" have revolutionized biomedical research—"Among the tremendous advances resulting from biotechnology are monoclonal antibodies, which have led to new diagnostics and therapies; gene isolation and cloning, which has resulted in the discovery of genes responsible for a variety of genetic disorders; and recombinant technologies, which have enabled researchers to develop new generations of vaccines to prevent disease. My own research focuses on diseases of the immune system.
