British historian and archaeologist (1817-1894) best known as the excavator of Nimrud and Nineveh, where he uncovered a large proportion of the Assyrian palace reliefs. ALS signed "A. H. Layard," one page both sides, 4.5 x 7, April 24, 1860. Handwritten letter sending thanks for "an explanation which you have so frankly and kindly given." In fine condition, with rusty circular paperclip impressions to the top.
