Description

Dewey approves of changes made in "the system of discipline and training at the Naval Academy"

TLS, one page, 7 x 9, The Admiral of the Navy letterhead, May 26, 1914. Letter to Captain William Freeland Fullam, in part: "Thank you for acquainting me with the changes you have inaugurated in the system of discipline and training at the Naval Academy. Your reasoning appears to me to be fundamentally sound. Whatever tends to promote the self-reliance and self-control of the graduate will unquestionably assist in rounding out his preparation for the responsibilities of a commission, in promoting his initial efficiency on ship-board, and in minimizing the dangers inherent in the transition from school life to the stern field of his profession. In my opinion no steps could advance more directly toward that end than those which you have taken; namely, the extension of the privileges granted to the first classmen and the equalizing among them of the duties of actual command." In fine condition, with two file holes to the top edge.

Rear Admiral William Freeland Fullam (1855-1926) was an officer in the United States Navy during World War I. His commands through his long and distinguished naval career ranged from the sailing ship USS Chesapeake in 1904 to the battleship USS Mississippi in 1909. During World War I, Fullam commanded the Patrol Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet, and was senior officer in command of the Pacific Fleet during the absence of the Fleet's Commander-in-Chief in South Atlantic waters.
