Description

General in the United States Army known as 'Fighting Fred Funston,' (1865-1917) who is best remembered for his roles in the Spanish-American War and the Philippine-American War; his actions in the latter earned him the Medal of Honor. Partly-printed DS, one page, 15 x 10.25, September 19, 1898. As the commanding officer of the 20th Regiment of Kansas Infantry, U.S. Volunteers, Colonel Frederick Funston appoints Lorillard Wickham as a "Corporal in Company 'K'…in the service of the United States." Signed at the conclusion by Funston, and countersigned by Charles B. Walker. In very good to fine condition, with scattered small stains, and creasing to the side edges. This document dates to approximately one month after the United States and Spain ceased hostilities in the Spanish-American War, and about a month before the 20th Kansas Infantry continued onto the Philippines to engage in the imminent Philippine-American War.
