Description

Signer of the Declaration of Independence from Massachusetts (1744-1814) who later served as vice president under James Madison. His name entered the language as a result of his support of politically advantageous redistricting, which became known as 'gerrymandering.' Partly-printed DS, signed “E. Gerry,” one page both sides, 9.25 x 13.5, February 25, 1811. As governor of Massachusetts, Gerry appoints Moses Chamberlain "to be one of our Justices of the Peace." Signed in the upper left in ink by Governor Gerry, and countersigned at the conclusion by Secretary of the Commonwealth Benjamin Homans. The white paper seal affixed to the upper left remains fully intact. In very good to fine condition, with partial separation to its central horizontal fold.
