Description

President Wilson declines a "profitable" film proposal—"It seems to me that it would seem a rather cheap exploitation"

TLS as president, one page, 7 x 8.75, White House letterhead, August 2, 1915. Letter to F. A. Duneka of Harper & Brothers, responding to "the proposal to make film stories out of my little essay, 'When a Man Comes to Himself,' and out of my History of the American People." In part: "There are many things to make the idea interesting and attractive, but I must say that I am old-fashioned enough to have an inveterate prejudice against this sort of thing. It seems to me that it would seem a rather cheap exploitation of both books. I would feel almost as if I had gone on the stage myself to advertise my wares and my judgment is against it, profitable though I dare say it could easily be made. I hope that you will pardon this attitude of mine towards commercial matters. I have an instinctive feeling that the people of the country would not like it, particularly at this time, and that it is unwise to undertake it." In very good to fine condition, with two extra horizontal folds.
