Description

Former Democratic congressman (1815-1880) who served as Confederate Secretary of War. Civil War-dated LS, three pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.75 x 7.75, Confederate States of America, War Department letterhead, July 22, 1864. Letter to Brigadier General Henry A. Wise, in part: "I regret the information I have to give in reply to your inquiries will be less satisfactory than I could have wished. The President, to whom the direction is left by the law, has, in consequence of an application by some of the members of the Military Committee of the Senate who thought it would be the desire of that body to modify the law at its next session, determined not to put the Staff Bill in operation during the vacation. This will prevent appointment in the several cases mentioned by you, but it may be more satisfactory that I should add that services in the Military Institute could hardly be considered as meeting the terms of the law requiring service in the field. The other two young gentlemen however meritorious, as I doubt not they are, being under age, would, according to a resolution of the President, not be considered by him eligible for commission. This I believe has alone in the case of young Mr. Warwick, prevented his receiving promotion heretofore." Seddon adds a brief postscript. In fine condition, with small partial separations to intersecting folds.
