War correspondent (1887-1939) who lived a life of danger; he was one of radio's first news commentators, known for his fast talking delivery. Serving as a World War I correspondent, Gibbons lost an eye after being hit by German gunfire while attempting to rescue an American soldier at the Battle of Belleau Wood, France. Letter to Kathryn Bourland, in full: "It is very gratifying to me to know that you are enjoying my Monday evening radio talks, and your kindness in writing to tell me so is greatly appreciated. If you have any suggestions to offer for future talks that would be of interest to you and to the radio audience as well, won't you send them along to the program director of the National Broadcasting Company.
