Civil War-dated ALS as president signed “A. Lincoln,” one page, 5 x 8, Executive Mansion letterhead, March 31, 1864. Short letter to Vice President Hannibal Hamlin, in full: "Yours of this date is received, and the subject of it shall be attended to." The letter is affixed inside a presentation folder. In very good to fine condition, with lightly trimmed edges, soft creasing, and some small faint stains.
In spite of its brevity, this is an exceptionally desirable handwritten letter from President Lincoln made special by three notable traits: Lincoln letters on “Executive Mansion” letterhead are quite rare; correspondence between a sitting president and his vice president, especially during wartime, is not commonly seen at auction; and the proximity of the date to Hamlin's removal as vice president—two months later, at the 1864 National Union National Convention, Hamlin was dropped from the ticket in favor of War Democrat Andrew Johnson, the Military Governor of Tennessee, a running mate Lincoln believed would prove essential in securing the southern vote and thus winning the reelection.
