Description

Conservative jurist and politician (1862-1942) who served as an associate justice on the Supreme Court from 1922 to 1938. ALS signed “Geo. Sutherland,” two pages on two adjoining sheets, 5.75 x 7.75, Supreme Court of the United States letterhead, November 27, 1938. Letter to Nicholas R. Criss, in part: "I have read your thesis with care and with the utmost interest…As the subject of it, I have a feeling of constraint about making comments; but, speaking objectively, I do not hesitate to say that in my opinion you have done an exceedingly fine and discriminating piece of work, exhibiting a power of analysis, a grasp of essentials, and a literary quality of which if I were your father I should be very proud, as I am sure he is. If another had been the subject of it, I should say more. You will find on the first fly leaf a list of pages, upon or opposite which I have made some short notes, mainly references to decisions calculated, I think, to illustrate, confirm or perhaps qualify your text." In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope addressed in Sutherland's hand, with his initials ("G. S.") above the printed return address.
