Description

Rare oversized portrait of the ill-fated Apollo 1 crewman, presented to the Manned Spacecraft Center's A/V Department

Naval pilot and astronaut (1935-1967) who was one of three crew members to perish in the Apollo 1 command module fire on January 27, 1967. Rare oversized color matte-finish 10.75 x 13.5 photo of Chaffee with pilot's wings on his lapel, affixed to its original 14.75 x 18.75 mount, signed and inscribed on the mount in blue ballpoint, "Best regards to Audio-Visual, Roger B. Chaffee.” In very good to fine condition, with a chip to the right edge of the photo, and a few scattered surface scuffs. Consignor notes that this was presented to the Audio-Visual Department at the Manned Spacecraft Center, where this portrait was displayed for many years. A remarkable piece, virtually unheard of in this large size.
