Description

ALS signed “W. T. Sherman,” eight pages, 5.25 x 8.25, Headquarters Army of the United States letterhead, March 9, 1876. Lengthy letter to General Manning Ferguson Force, in part: "I will be most happy to contribute all I can to…Capt. Marigold, but the papers you ask for cannot be gotten. I had to get a hundred copies of my Field orders published by a hand press in the office at Washington for distribution…and came near having to pay the small cost at my own expense. Though they command a great Army, the Govt could not print them though they could an infinite amount of stuff for local quarter masters, provost marshals, etc. I enclose an order with General…for a campaign map, and such others as he can get at the Chf Engrs office. Even then I can only get as a matter of favor not of right. Generals Grant & Belknap could have cured all this, but they preferred to follow in the old channels." In fine condition.

Manning Ferguson Force was a lawyer, judge, and soldier from Ohio (1824-1899) who became known as the commander of the 20th Ohio Volunteer Infantry in the Union Army during the American Civil War. He was promoted to major general of volunteers in March 1865 and, following the Battle of Atlanta, he participated in Sherman's March to the Sea. Force was a recipient of the Army Medal of Honor for gallantry in action.
