Veteran of the Seminole and Mexican-American Wars (1818-1861) who was the first Union general to be killed in the American Civil War and is noted for his actions in the state of Missouri at the beginning of the conflict. ALS signed “N. Lyon, Capt. 2nd Inf'y Com'g Post,” one page, 7.75 x 9.75, October 3, 1856. Letter to "Col. H. K. Craig, Chief of Ordnance, U.S. Army," written from Fort Lookout, in full: "Herewith enclosed I respectfully transmit a Quarterly Return of the Ordnance pertaining to this Post for the Third Quarter of 1856." In fine condition.
