Handwritten endorsement, signed as president, "J. K. P.," dated May 27, 1846, written on the reverse of the second integral page of a letter addressed to Polk by Pastor John C. Smith, who writes, in part: "The Rev. Mr. Chambers of Philadelphia presented you with two letters from gentlemen of distinction asking the appointment of his stepson…as Assistant Surgeon in the U S Army. Other letters of recommendation from equally high sources have been handed to Surgeon Genl Lawson, Secretaries Buchanan and Marcy …" Polk's endorsement, in full: "Referred to the Surgeon General of U.S. Army, May 27, 1846, J.K.P."
