Description

British general (1833-1885) who, in 1860, crushed the Taiping Rebellion in China, earning the nickname 'Chinese.' ALS signed “C. G. Gordon,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7, United Service Club letterhead, December 22, 1882. Marked "Private," a letter to a "Mr. Barnard," in part: "Thank you for your kind letter, which interested me deeply, and was of great use to important persons who are interested in Egypt. I am glad you have left the Egyptian service & glad you have so good & honest a man as my namesake…to look after you. I have told…if they wish the truth to read N. Y. H. articles on Egypt, so write clearly…I shall do no more…and go to Haifa near Mt. Carmel to live. I leave London on 27th Dec. for Port Said thence go to Haifa…I hope you may come during the summer & see me." In fine condition.
