Union cavalry officer (1822-1894) who was later elected the governor of California; during the Civil War, he was captured during a July 1864 attempt to free prisoners from the infamous Andersonville prison, becoming the Union army's highest-ranking prisoner of war. Partly-printed DS, one page, 8 x 10, February 11, 1869. Document appointing William Hodges as "Justice of the Peace for the 3d magisterial district of Frederick county, State of Virginia." Boldly signed at the conclusion by Stoneman. In very good to fine condition, with old tape repairs to fold splits, and a light stain touching the signature.
