Description

Union general (1802-1886) during the American Civil War who achieved fame by his unauthorized 1862 order emancipating slaves in three Southern states, for his leadership of United States troops during the Valley Campaigns of 1864, and as the president of the military commission trying the conspirators involved with the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. LS signed “D. Hunter,” one page, 7.75 x 9.75, September 25, 1867. Letter to Lieut. L. H. Orleman, in part: "You, are hereby informed that you have passed a satisfactory examination before this Board, according to the Act of Congress approved July 28th 1866." Prominently signed at the conclusion by Hunter as president of the Board of Cavalry Examination. In very good to fine condition, with overall wrinkling.
