Description

Lincoln once described him as 'little more than a first rate clerk.' Civil War-dated ALS signed “H. W. Halleck,” one page, 5.25 x 8, Headquarters, Department of the Missouri letterhead, February 24, 1862. Letter to Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton, in full: "If it be thought that the present arrangement is best for the public service I have nothing to say. I have done my duty in making the suggestions, and leave it to my superiors to adopt or reject them." In fine condition, with light toning along the vertical fold.
