American writer, lecturer, reformer, and politician (1835-1930) who became the first woman to serve in the U.S. Senate, but she served for only one day. Scarce ink signature, "Rebecca Latimer Felton, aged 89—June 10th, Cartersville, Ga., Ex-U.S. Senator from Ga.,” on an off-white 4 x 2.25 card. In fine condition, with a few small stains, and old adhesive residue on the back.
When Senator Thomas E. Watson died unexpectedly on September 18, 1922, Governor Thomas W. Hardwick, himself a candidate for the next general election to the Senate, sought an appointee who would not be a competitor in the coming special election to fill the vacant seat. Hardwick wisely chose Felton, a prominent society woman and suffragette, who he hoped would secure the vote of the new women voters alienated by his opposition to the 19th Amendment. At 87 years, nine months, and 22 days old, she was the oldest freshman senator to enter the Senate, and she was the only woman to have served as a Senator from Georgia until January 6, 2020, when Kelly Loeffler was appointed by Governor Brian Kemp.
