ALS signed “Oliver Wendell Holmes,” four pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 5.75, December 18, 1878. Letter to Miss Richardson, in part: "It is a small tribute for a writer to pay the reader who has been pleased with him and taken the trouble to tell him so, to gratify his unknown correspondent with the sight of his handwriting, and I never refuse it—therein differing from some of my literary friends with whose names you are not unacquainted…There are good people everywhere. If the paper your letter had enclosed had reached me a fortnight earlier my wife would have shown it to her sister, Mrs. Fanny Cabot Paine, who was—whose bodily frame was laid in the earth one week ago today…I could not help thinking with what profound interest she would have read the story of Bessbrook." In fine condition, with old mounting remnants along the right edge of the last page.
