Partly-printed DS as president, one page, 16 x 13.25, March 25, 1853. President Pierce appoints John L. Smith "to be a Justice of the Peace, in the country of Washington, in the District of Columbia." Prominently signed at the conclusion in ink by President Pierce, and countersigned by Secretary of State William L. Marcy. The white paper seal affixed to the lower left remains intact. In good to very good condition, with toning, foxing, and old tape repairs to some of the edge tears and to complete separation along the central vertical fold.
