Union general (1822-1895) promoted to major general on March 30, 1863. He was conspicuous in storming Marye's Heights during the Chancellorsville campaign, and at Gettysburg he was selected to command the 1st Corps after the death of John F. Reynolds. Civil War-dated autograph endorsement, one page, 3 x 3, in full: "H'd Qrs. 3d Division, March 21, 1863, Respectfully forwarded, Approved for today, John Newton, Brig. Genl. Commd'g." Double-matted and framed with an image to an overall size of 12 x 10. In very good to fine condition, with overall soiling and toning.
