Union general (1831-1906) who served as army commander in Sherman's Atlanta campaign and who later became General in Chief of the army. ALS signed “John M. Schofield, Bvt. 2'd Lieut., 2'd Artillery, U.S. Army,” one page, 7.75 x 9.75, July 23, 1853. Letter to Colonel Samuel Cooper, in full: "I have the honor to communicate to the War Department my acceptance of the appointment of Brevet Second Lieutenant in the Second Regiment of Artillery in the service of the United States. I herewith enclose my oath of allegiance. My age is 21 years & 10 months. My residence when appointed was Freeport, Stevenson Co., Ill. I was born in the state of New York." In fine condition.
