Longtime Democratic Senator Hubert Humphrey of Minnesota, who lost to Nixon in the 1968 presidential election, had passed away on January 13, 1978. Knowing he was dying from cancer, Humphrey spent his last days calling old friends and opponents to invite them to his funeral—Gerald Ford, Richard Nixon, Jimmy Carter, and Walter Mondale all attended to pay their final respects. He specifically requested that Nixon—living depressed in California and still unwelcome in Washington—stand in the place of honor of a former president. This kind gesture, which resulted in Nixon's first journey back to Washington since his resignation, marked the beginning of Nixon's rehabilitation from disgraced former president to valued elder statesman.
