Description

Early letter from Carpenter on centrifuge training—"The machine is a frightening monster"

Very early ALS signed “M. Scott Carpenter,” one page both sides, 8 x 10, Project Mercury letterhead, April 26, 1960. Letter to Ken and Joyce Browne, in part: "It is good to know there are others who are as enthusiastic about space exploration as we are. It is indeed a very very fascinating occupation. One of our jobs is to write and tell about it so that others can know about what our first baby steps in this direction involve and if the article you read helped then I am doubly pleased. At the moment we are in Johnsville going through another training period on the centrifuge. The machine is a frightening monster but you can learn a lot from it if you don't let it get ahead of you." In very good to fine condition, with minor loss to the upper left corner, and a small tear to the lower left corner. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, addressed in his own hand, with Carpenter adding his surname to the return address field.
