Description

Anglo-Irish soldier and administrator (1724-1808) who twice served as Governor of the Province of Quebec and commanded British troops in the American War of Independence. In 1782 and 1783 he led as the commander-in-chief of all British forces in North America, and is notable for carrying out the Crown's promise of freedom to slaves who joined the British; he oversaw the evacuation of British forces, Loyalists, and more than 3,000 freedmen from New York City in 1783 to transport them to a British colony. Toward this end, Carleton assigned Samuel Birch to create the Book of Negroes. ALS signed “Bar. Carleton,” one page, 7.5 x 11.5, December 25, 1803. Letter to Major General Browning, in full: "I had the honor to receive the enclosed letter, from Lord Bates this morning, upon which, I beg to have His Royal Highness, the Commander in Chief's, directions, for my mode of conduct. I have no document in my possession authorizing me to expand the public money, nor have I any person within the district, to whom I can apply for a disbursement of one shilling." Double-matted and framed with an artistic portrait of Carleton to an overall size of 19.75 x 18. In fine condition.
