ALS signed “Jim Thurber,” eight pages, 8.5 x 11, June 28, 1943. Letter of condolences to the widow of Eugene F. Saxton, a longtime editor at Harper & Brothers, in full: "Helen and I were profoundly shocked to hear of Gene's passing. We deeply share the grief which everyone who knew him and worked with him must so keenly feel. I cherish what must have been one of Gene's lost letters, in which he proposed the agreeable and exciting plan of us working together on a collection of my pieces. I was actually engaged in writing out my ideas on the book when the sad news came to us. It is some consolation to go ahead with a project which was his own. Gene's name was often spoken in our house because we remember him affectionately as friend, counselor, companion, and host. His quiet and easy understanding was a comforting thing to know. He was highly accomplished in understanding the real and fancied problems of his writers and in suggesting solution. We greatly regret that mutual efforts, by letter and phone, to get together were unavailing because of conditions of the time. We shall always remember and appreciate the friendship and helpful kindliness of a very special human being, and we send you and your sons our deepest and most heartfelt consolations." In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope.
