Description

Dutch aristocrat, zoologist, and museum director (1778-1858) for whom several species of fishes, birds, mammals, and reptiles are named. ALS in French, signed “C. J. Temminck,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 8 x 9.75, April 21, 1821. Letter about insects and fishes to Italian entomologist Maximilian Spinola, in part (translated): "I was late in my response because I was preparing two boxes containing some wonderful lepidoptera and other insects from Java and Malaysia. I believe that you don't have foreign lepidoptera so fresh and perfect including the most beautiful butterfly displayed perfectly. I accept in exchange the offer that you made of fishes from the Mediterranean Sea for the Amsterdam Museum. Please prepare and mount two exemplars of each kind choosing the most large possible accordingly with your opinion." He suggests to put the fishes of medium size is dome demijohns and gives instructions for good shipping. If satisfied with the fishes, he will proceed with a second shipment of entomologic items. In fine condition, with seal-related paper loss to the integral address leaf.
