On October 10, 1973, Spiro Agnew resigned his position as Vice President and pleaded no contest to criminal charges of tax evasion and money laundering while he was governor of Maryland. Ford, then House Minority Leader, was nominated to take Agnew's position on October 12, and on December 6th, the House confirmed Ford by a vote of 387 to 35.
