Description

Varick later served as Washington's private secretary, mayor of New York, and a New York state legislator. Partly-printed DS, signed “Rich'd Varick,” one page, 8.5 x 13, March 8, 1796. Mayor Varick grants Charles Hart a "Licence to keep an Inn or Tavern for retailing strong or spirituous Liquors in his Dwelling House," under the terms that he not "keep a disorderly Inn or Tavern, or suffer or permit any Cock-Fighting, Gaming, or Playing with Cards or Dice, or keep any Billiard-Table."
