Description

Taft forwards news of a military commission, "unless the President changes his mind, which I do not think is likely"

TLS signed “Wm. H. Taft,” one page, 8 x 10.5, War Department letterhead, January 7, 1907. Letter to Brigadier General William S. McCaskey, in full: "I write to say to you that General Bell was quite anxious to have you made Major-General before he became so; bit the President and I felt that it was necessary to give him, as Chief of Staff, the benefit of the rank, because of inconvenience which arises from being as the Chief of Staff an officer of only the first general grade. I write to say to you, however, that unless the President changes his mind, which I do not think is likely, you will be appointed a Major-General to succeed General Wade, so that for a short time at least you will enjoy that rank and will be retired as such." Taft adds "Personal" to the upper right in his own hand. In fine condition.
