Childs, Esq., in Washington, in part: "In the midst of my many engagements I had neglected to call Mr. Whiting's attention particularly to the application of Mrs. Larkin until yesterday. I am much gratified to learn from a note just received…that the evidence in the case was satisfactory and that he sent, to you a few days since the certificate allowing 50$ per month (the highest rate allowable)." In fine condition. Pierce would remain president until March 4th, when he was succeeded by James Buchanan.
