Description

Ohioan politician (born 1816) who served as the seventh Chief Justice of the United States from 1874 to his death in 1888. ALS signed “M. R. Waite,” one page both sides, 5 x 8, October 27, 1887. In part: “I regret exceedingly that it is not in my power to accept the invitation with which I have been honored by the Chamber of Commerce of the State of New York, to meet its members & friends at the 119th Annual Banquet of the Chamber on Tuesday evening, November 15th. The Supreme Court will be in session then, and I must not be away. But for this I should have made every effort to be with you on such an interesting occasion.” In fine condition, with intersecting folds.
