Description

Brigadier general (1829-1909) in the Union Army during the American Civil War, who later served as the US Commissioner of Internal Revenue, as a US Representative from Illinois, and as the US Commissioner of Pensions from 1889 to 1893, a position in which he was responsible for overseeing the acceptance or rejection of pension applications for thousands of Civil War veterans. Civil War era ANS in pencil, signed “G. B. Raum,” one page, 5.25 x 8, no date. Written at "6 1/2 AM, Resaca," a note to General John Smith, in full: "Gen'l Steadman will move at 6 o'clock this AM with 1800 men + 3 pieces of artilery [sic]." In very good condition, with creasing and paper loss.
