Confederate general and politician (1806-1863) who served as secretary of war under President Buchanan, the 31st governor of Virginia, and lost the crucial Battle of Fort Donelson. LS, one page, 7.75 x 10, December 19, 1857. Written from the War Department, a letter to Attorney General J. S. Black, in part: "I have the honor to transmit herewith, abstracts of titles of the following named persons to certain squares of ground embraced within the proposed purchase of the United States for the extension of the Arsenal in this city, and to request your official opinion as to the validity of the same to convey titles thereto." Floyd lists a series of four allocated squares. In fine condition, with splitting along horizontal folds.
