Superb 5.25 x 8.5 large cabinet photograph of King Edward VII in a suit and tie, holding a hat in his right hand and the omnipresent cigar in the left, signed in ink, "Albert Edward, 1900." Produced by J. F. Langhans of Prague. Displayed in an 8 x 10.5 contemporary brown leather frame with ornate gilt tooling and support leg. In fine condition, with gouging and wear to the frame.
This image is a rare, original portrait of Edward (as Prince of Wales) taken by the photographers J. F. Langhans of Marienbad, Prague, in what is now the Czech Republic. This is a platinum photographic print (hence the photograph clarity) prepared as a large carte-de-visite or cabinet card. A copy of this same photograph is housed on the Royal Collection Trust (Access Number 2107339). Edward had a voracious appetite for both food and sex. He vacationed annually in the spa town of Marienbad for his 'cure,' which allegedly involved some energetic efforts with an assortment of exotic and willing Moravian prostitutes.
