Description

American artist (1932-2007) who became influential in Britain with figurative and Pop Art paintings that ran against the grain of 1960s and ’70s abstraction; he was influenced by a wide range of art and intellectual sources, including Kafka, Kierkegaard and Walter Benjamin and painters from Titian to Cézanne. ALS signed “Kitaj,” one page, 7.25 x 10.5, November 9, 1978. Letter to Peter Howard of Serendipity Books, in full: "Please send the Hueffer Portrait but not the Allison Peers which I have." He adds a postscript: "Dunc. was here for a great visit. Bob Wilson showed us his own treasures (Lume Spento…. Wilde and Stein goodies etc)." Addressed on the reverse in Kitaj's hand, and signed again with his surname in the return address area. In fine condition.
