American civil rights activist (born 1922) who, in 1969, was elected in Fayette, Mississippi, as the state's first African-American mayor in the post-Reconstruction era. Letter to Bill Hagenaver, in part: "Although I am somewhat discouraged at the extent of the resistance to Black candidates running, in numbers, for public office in this state, I am not overwhelmed. To say I expected such resistance would not be true. But to say that I personally was confident of winning also would not be true. We have no intention of quitting. We'll keep coming. Racism and poverty must be eradicated from this country. It will take all of us working together with all our resources to make life better for all our people." In fine condition.
