Description

American industrialist and politician (1824-1893) who cofounded the Central Pacific Railroad and later established Stanford University. Ink signature, "Leland Stanford, Cal.,” on an off-white 6.5 x 1.75 slip. Also includes a signature of his wife, "Leland Stanford Jr. University, Compliments of Mrs. Leland Stanford," on an off-white 5.75 x 2.25 slip. In fine condition, with light toning. In 1891, Jane and Leland Stanford established Leland Stanford Jr. University in memory of their only child, who had died of typhoid fever at age 15—today it is more commonly known simply as Stanford University.
