Vice president of the Confederacy under Jefferson Davis (1812-1883). ALS signed “Alexander H. Stephens,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 5 x 8, April 28, 1870. Letter to Herschel V. Johnson, in part: "From the paper I have heard from you and from that arena of information I have learned of your deep and heavy domestic affection and the loss of a darling child. Most profoundly did I sympathize with you in this bereavement." In very good to fine condition, with scattered creasing, light staining to the first page, and minor paper loss to the last page.
