TLS, one page, 5.25 x 8.5, Val-Kill Cottage letterhead, June 5, 1945. Letter to Andrew Cairns, president of the UNRRA Staff Society, in response to a condolence letter sent after FDR's death in which Cairns asked if she could suggest a way to 'commemorate the international service ideals of the late President Roosevelt.' In part: "I am sorry your letter of April 23rd has been so long unanswered. I would suggest that you confer with Mr. D. Basil O'Connor, 120 Broadway, New York City. He is organizing a Memorial Committee which will probably meet sometime around the middle of this month to consider all plans and suggestions." She adds a handwritten postscript, "I am deeply appreciative of the thought of the UNRRA Staff Society * I like their idea & hope it can be accomplished." Roosevelt's letter is stapled to Cairns's retained copy of the letter sent to her; a TLS from Basil O'Connor is also included, in which he suggests a scholarship fund. In fine condition.
