Description

"An experience that humbled and yet exalted the spirit"

Two items: a launch day ‘Bishop’ commemorative cover with a cachet honoring Apollo 15, postmarked July 26, 1971, at the Kennedy Space Center, signed in black felt tip, "Dave Scott," "Al Worden," and "Jim Irwin"; and a TLS, signed "Jim Irwin," one page, 7.75 x 9.75, March 8, 1976, High Flight letterhead, addressed to school teacher Phyllis Norbutt, in part, “The opportunity to travel through space and visit another world was an experience that humbled and yet exalted the spirit. I am grateful to God and my fellow Americans for making the voyage possible. When I climbed out of the lunar module Falcon and beheld the beauty of the Apennine Mountains I was spellbound. The mountains were majestic in their lofty grandeur. I felt truly lifted to new heights of emotional ecstasy. There was the lightness of the 1/6th normal weight, the psychological adjustment to see the half earth above us in black heavens, and then the strong sense that we were not alone—that God was there.” The letter is double-matted and framed with a color photo of Falcon on the lunar surface to an overall size of 26 x 17. In overall fine condition, with slight fading to signature on the letter.
